KOLLAM: The State committee of the National Highway Action Forum has urged the government to take up the development of the Cherthala-Kazhakuttam course of NH 47 on the lines of the Cherthala-Aroor course by restricting it to an area of 30.5 metres.
Forum president S. Prakash Menon and secretary S. Sudarsanan Pillai said developing the highway under the BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) system would be harmful in all respects, even causing financial loss to the people. They said the National Highway Development Programme (NHDP) drafted for the development of the NH course was against the interests of the people.
While a four-lane route of international standards on the lines of the Cherthala-Aroor course can be constructed, the NHDP envisaged acquiring 45 metres of land for the development of the Cherthala-Kazhakuttam course and that too without any social or environmental impact studies, they said.
Theforum will hold a State-level convention in Karunagapally on Sunday.
