Kerala NH wide

Kerala National Highway width to reduce   June 2010
In Kerala the Association of Engineers has expressed strong reservation against the move to reduce width of national highways to 30 metres during the next phase of highway development. The six-lane roads would become inevitable in the near future if the growth in pattern in vehicle population is any indication.
A meeting of its state committee was recently held in Kalpetta, where resolutions to this effect were passed. A 4.5-metre-broad centre median was inevitable for the safe movement of vehicles at 80-100 km/hour along the main path. Service roads, as also footpaths, have to be provided for on both sides to accommodate slow-moving traffic and pedestrians.

Kerala has also proposed to develop six other national highways. These include: Calicut-Wynad on NH-212, Kochi-Madurai on NH-49, Kottam-Kumili on NH-220, Kollam-Chengottai on NH-208, Willington Island-Kundannur on NH-47A and Calicut-Palghat on NH-213.
NHAI had been asked to conduct feasibility study and submit DPRs on the proposed works. A decision on making these into four or two lanes will be taken on receipt of the report. Land acquisition will be done with Central funding. Toll tax system will be introduced as a pre-condition to get the road development fund.
The road renovation work in phase-I under Kerala State Transport Project is making good progress and the project in phase-II will be formulated soon.
